We now have a search engine for the DFS online Operation Manuals. It is
powered by Google. The following are some tips for the use of the search
engine.
Access the search engine here.
This is the very first screen of the DFS online Operation Manuals, General
Table of Contents of the volumes. This is the only screen from which you
can access the search engine. For this reason, we recommend you create a
shortcut for your Desktop.
There are two types of searches: a simple search and an advanced
search. With the simple search, you can find words or phrases in the
entire manual, and with the advanced search, you can limit the search
to a specific volume.
Simple Search To execute a simple search that will produce hits
from every volume, go to the Search block at the top of the
General Table of Contents page. Enter one of the following:
To conduct an unlimited search for one or more words, simply
enter the word or words. This will produce the most hits.
Example: The word child will produce 444 hits. While the words
child support will produce 169 hits.
To narrow the search, type quotation marks around the words.
Example: Enter "child support". This will produce
101 hits that have both words in the section.
To search for either word, enter OR between the words.
Example: If "child OR support" is entered, the
search will produce 551 hits.
Advanced Search The advanced search option is used to narrow the
search to specific volumes. The advanced search has five blocks
that are used to define the search. The blocks are:
With all of the words - will hit on any section that
contains both words, not necessarily together;
With the exact phrase - will hit on any section that
contains the exact phrase. Use this block to specify the
Volume. Do this by entering voli, volii, voliia, etc.;
With any of the words - will hit on any section that
contains any of the words in the phrase;
Without the words - use this block to designate any words
that are not to be included in the search.
In the collections - will limit the search to a designated
online source. The Division of Family Support Operation Manual
is automatically selected; however, the source selection can
be changed or additional sources can be included in the
search.
These blocks can be used separately or in conjunction with
each other to define the boundaries of the search.
Example: To limit the search to a specific volume of the
Division of Family Support Operation Manual, enter voliii in
the exact phrase block. Then enter in one of the other blocks
the word or words to be used in the search and select the
source you want to search.
To further narrow a search in a specific volume, you can
use quotation marks around the phrase.
Example: To search for the exact phrase child support in
Volume III, enter "voliii" in the exact phrase block
and enter "child support" in the all of the words
block.
Once the search is completed, the hits will be listed. The system is
set to display 10 hits per page. To increase the number of hits
displayed on a page, go to the block between the all of the words
block and the search button. Click on the arrow to display the number
of hits - 10, 20, 30, 50 or 100.
Sometimes the following message will appear at the end of a page:
"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have
omitted some entries very similar to the 21 already displayed. If you
like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results
included."
To display all of the hits, click on the underscored portion of the
message.
You can view the hits two ways:
Online manual section. Click on the link (shown in green) to the
specific manual section. This will display the normal manual
section but will not highlight the word or phrase.
Text version (cached data). Click on the link "Text
Version" to display the manual section. The advantage of the
text version is the word or phrase is highlighted throughout the
text.
